Project Overview
Pakistan possesses abundant kaolin mineral resources, and its finished products are widely used in ceramics, papermaking, coatings, and rubber filler applications. To further enhance product added value and market competitiveness, a large local mineral processing enterprise launched a Kaolin Ultrafine Grinding project and decided to introduce a high-standard ultrafine grinding production line.
Customer’s Key Requirements:
- Material: Kaolin (medium hardness, with strict requirements on whiteness and purity)
- Equipment Selection: Epic Powder ball mill and classifier production line
- Final Fineness: 800 mesh (D97 ≤ 18 μm)
- Capacity Requirement: 3 tons per hour (3 t/h)

Process Scheme Design
To meet the dual requirements of high capacity and fine particle size, Epic Powder’s engineering team designed a closed-circuit production system specifically for Kaolin Ultrafine Grinding, consisting of a horizontal ball mill combined with an ITC air classifier. The system ensures stable production, high classification efficiency, and consistent product quality.
Process Flow:
- Crushing Pretreatment: Raw ore is pre-crushed by a crusher to a suitable size (usually < 10 mm).
- Ball Mill Grinding: The ball mill grinds the material using high-alumina ceramic liners and high-alumina grinding media, which prevent iron contamination and ensure high whiteness of the kaolin.
- Air Classification: A negative-pressure fan conveys the ground powder into the ITC ultrafine classifier.
- Qualified Fine Product: The classifier wheel allows fine powder meeting the 800-mesh requirement to pass, and cyclones and dust collectors collect the qualified product.
- Coarse Particle Return: The classifier discharges oversized particles from the bottom outlet and returns them to the ball mill for secondary grinding.
- Negative-Pressure Collection: The entire system operates under negative pressure, with no dust leakage, fully complying with local environmental standards.
Operating Results
After commissioning and stable operation, the production line has demonstrated excellent performance:
- Actual Capacity: Stable at 3.2 t/h, slightly exceeding the customer’s expectation.
- Product Fineness: More than 97% passing 800 mesh, with a smooth and narrow particle size distribution.
- Equipment Evaluation: The system runs reliably, and the ITC classifier shows very high classification efficiency, significantly reducing over-grinding.
