Le gypse brut, ou sulfate de calcium dihydrat\u00e9 (Ca[SO\u2084]\u00b72H\u2082O), est \u00e9galement appel\u00e9 CaSO\u2084\u00b72H\u2082O mou, gypse hydrat\u00e9 ou sulfate de calcium dihydrat\u00e9. Il appartient au syst\u00e8me cristallin monoclinique, avec des cristaux en forme de plaques, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement denses ou fibreux. Sa couleur varie du blanc au gris, en passant par le rouge ou le brun. De plus, il pr\u00e9sente un \u00e9clat vitreux ou soyeux, une duret\u00e9 Mohs de 2 et une masse volumique de 2,3\u00a0g\/cm\u00b3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le gypse anhydrite, quant \u00e0 lui, est du sulfate de calcium anhydre (Ca[SO\u2084]). Il pr\u00e9sente un syst\u00e8me cristallin orthorhombique et des cristaux en forme de plaques, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement denses ou granulaires. Sa couleur est blanche ou gris clair, avec un \u00e9clat vitreux. De plus, sa duret\u00e9 Mohs est de 3 \u00e0 3,5 et sa densit\u00e9 varie de 2,8 \u00e0 3,0 g\/cm\u00b3. Les cristaux bien d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement appel\u00e9s gypse transparent. L&#039;alb\u00e2tre fibreux ou blocs, au lustre soyeux, est appel\u00e9 gypse fibreux. Dans certaines r\u00e9gions o\u00f9 les conditions de croissance sont favorables, les cristaux d&#039;alb\u00e2tre peuvent m\u00eame former des cristaux g\u00e9ants, atteignant plusieurs m\u00e8tres de long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gypsum-uses\">Utilisations du gypse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le gypse est un mat\u00e9riau industriel et de construction polyvalent aux multiples usages. Il peut \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 comme retardateur de prise dans le ciment. Il est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9 dans les produits de construction \u00e0 base de gypse, le mod\u00e9lisme et comme additif alimentaire et pharmaceutique. Il joue un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans la production d&#039;acide sulfurique. Il est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9 comme charge dans le papier et la peinture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La structure microporeuse de l&#039;alb\u00e2tre, ainsi que sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 se d\u00e9shydrater sous l&#039;effet de la chaleur, lui conf\u00e8rent d&#039;excellentes propri\u00e9t\u00e9s. Il assure une isolation phonique, thermique et ignifuge. Les moulages en alb\u00e2tre sont courants en d\u00e9coration int\u00e9rieure. Ils allient esth\u00e9tique et fonctionnalit\u00e9. En cas d&#039;accident, des moulages en alb\u00e2tre sont utilis\u00e9s dans les h\u00f4pitaux.
